A darkly twisted psychological drama, ‘Phobos’ is a short film set before the events of ‘Alien : Covenant’. Featuring what would become the crew of the ill-fated colony ship Covenant, the film joins them in the final stages of the highly unorthodox recruitment process for their upcoming mission – orchestrated by their future employer, the Weyland Yutani Corporation.
Subjected to an increasingly traumatic series of intrusive psychological tests, as they are monitored under scientific conditions, the exact purpose behind the mission candidate’s ordeal is shrouded in mystery, but it becomes ominously evident that a key focus is the study of their fear responses. Why should the Weyland Yutani Corporation, ‘Builder of Better Worlds’, want such information?
The majority of ‘Phobos’ was improvised. The details of the production were kept a secret from the cast, whose only direction was to stay in character, before they were brought onto set and over eight cameras rolled as they were strapped into a chair inside a refrigerated metal box and taken on a genuine ‘Fear Test’ – a scientifically devised process to induce fear and anxiety in a subject for the purpose of deducing and analyzing their fears and phobias. The performance and reactions delivered by this process were incredibly powerful and the resulting footage was then painstakingly molded in the edit.
